Lay Speaker Ministry
March 23-24, 2012
TRAINING
Circuit #10 will be offering a Basic Class and an Advanced Class for Lay Speaker
training on March 23rd and 24th.
Hope United Methodist Church will be the host site.
The training will begin on Friday evening (5:30 p.m. through 9:00 p.m.) and
complete on Saturday (9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m.).
Light meals and snacks plus beverages will be provided throughout the
training.
Details will be provided “later”, i.e., registration forms, cost, and the
Advanced Class’ course title.
Save the date:
March 23-24, 2012!
If you are not currently a Certified Lay Speaker, you may be interested in
attending this training. You are not
expected to preach after taking a lay speaking course, but we all need good
communication skills to lead others and share our faith stories.
Lay Speakers are called to proclaim the gospel in many different ways –
in leadership and supportive roles, to help others grow in a life-giving
relationship with Jesus Christ.
The apostle Paul tells us “Do not conform
any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of
your mind. Then you will be able to
test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.”
(Romans 12:2)
God is calling each of us to be witnesses who proclaim the presence and power of
God through all that we are and all that we do.
Listen… Is God calling you to
a new way of service and asking you to be a Certified Lay Speaker?

Greetings From the New President
It has been quite a while since Howard departed for warmer climates. I have undergone a few medical procedures, as well as, attempting to keep my business operating. It appears that life was determined to happen during this period :-)
I hope to contact those groups that are on the list of known groups Howard left me. I then hope to contact some of the churches in the conference to offer service to the pastors. I am a Certified Lay Person and would speak on the benefits of having membership in the Yellowstone Conference United Methodist Men.
I will be starting to put together a meeting for during the Annual Conference for the United Methodist Men. If anyone has any suggestions, Please e-mail me at

.
If anyone is interested, I have been around the Methodist Churches since the early 70’s. I currently am at Hope United Methodist Church in Billings, MT. I am a computer consultant and Amateur Radio Operator. I travel around the state at different times, so I am willing to work on scheduling some meetings in various locations.
Today in church, Pastor Gary Gieman talked about Jonah. In some ways I feel a bit like Jonah in this new adventure. I am taking tentative steps to get started and how to see where this will lead. I do think Jesus wishes us to communicate and work together to make disciples. When we work together as the body of Christ, we are able to do much more than individually. Montana is a very independent state, but we can realize some benefits from talking together.
This site will be changed as necessary to help facilitate communications. Also, you may connect via Facebook.
Have a great week.

How to Give a Two Minute "Pitch" In Front of the Church Volume 404 January 10, 2011 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Recently a man was given the opportunity to "pitch" the men in his church on becoming part of a weekly men's group. He asked for suggestions, and here's what I told him:
You can speak about 300 words in two minutes. That's only enough time to make one point. Anything more than that will clutter men's minds and lose their attention.
"Start from the end"-ask yourself, "What can I say that will inspire these men to want what I'm offering?" The most powerful motivator is always a changed life-your own is best.
Suggestions for the two minutes:
1. "Open" by praising your pastor for his ministry in your life and encouraging you to start a weekly Men's group. 20 seconds, about 50 words.
2. "Arrest their attention" with one heart-stopping sentence, like "Statistically, 40% of us in this sanctuary will end up divorced...but it doesn't have to be that way." (10 seconds)
3. Next, for the "body," tell them from your heart how a weekly Men's group has impacted your life. Tie this back to your attention-arresting sentence. For example, "Listening to the men in my small group gave me the desire to love my wife biblically, equipped me with practical ideas, and held me accountable to make it happen." Give one concrete example, like "Now we go on a date once a week and we've never been better," or "Now I pray with and for her every day, and I'm in puppy love." You will only have time for one example, so you can say something like "and I have 5 other examples I could give you if we had the time." (75 seconds)
4. For the close say, "Small groups change lives. I know. I'm one. I'm here to invite you to become one too. We're starting a new men's group next Sunday night. We only have room for ___ men, so let me know ASAP if you want more information or to sign up." (15 seconds)
By the way, everything I said to him adds up to exactly 300 words if you want to use it as a benchmark.
Yours for changed lives,
Patrick Morley, PhD

GOD Stories
Vision Strengthen the spiritual vitality and witness of believers by connecting them with the power of their own GodStories.
¨ Awaken passion and commitment within believers who seek and find God’s story intertwined in their own.
¨ Equip believers to become master Godstory tellers.
¨ Ignite inner radiance in believers in thankfulness toward Christ who has been with them through it all.
¨ Pass first-person accounts of God’s power and love to others.
¨ Unleash the power of GodStory:
- GodStory power begins when the story happens, in real life.
- GodStory power builds when it is mined and claimed in its miraculous context by the story owner.
- GodStory power is unleashed when it is refined and passed with clarity, authenticity and love to another soul.
Believers can
refine, shine, and mine
their GodStories!
¨ GodStory Mining is conducted through rich spiritual experiences offered in three-day retreat settings.
¨ Personal GodStories, trigger recall in others and teach them to find their GodStories.
¨ Some GodStory telling can be done through music. Music can take us to “hard to reach” places.
¨ Story Hearers help Story Owners refine their Godstories.
¨ GodStories mined and refined become potent, first-hand accounts of who God is and what God does. When a claim is staked by the Story Owner, they shine God from inside out.
Reaching Many Believers
To unleash the power of GodStory in believers, we must connect with a wide variety of persons across gender, age, interests, ethnicity and cultures. Combinations of different stories and music, delivered by diverse teams of story and music guides can reach many!
Constants that flow through GodStory mining operations are;
¨ GodStories are taught and modeled through stories told and music lyrics sung.
¨ My GodStories are always about what happened to me, and how God chose to move in my life.
¨ GodStories are always an historical fact, documented in my life and memory – for my good, and to God’s glory.
¨ GodStories illuminate my soul, and bless others.
GodStories are first-order evangelism, for times now and ahead. The past becomes alive, giving credence to the hope we hold and the faith we live.

The United Methodist Men work through the Amachi Partnership Agreement. We are attempting to increase the participation with BBBS program by men in the Yellowstone Annual Conference as indicated in Human Relations Day Proposal.
